If you've ever wondered why your child loves to spin until he's stumbling and giggling, here's the real answer: he's feeding his vestibular system — the inner-ear sense that tells the brain where the body is in space, and one of the most powerful ways to feed it is spinning. Most kids settle noticeably faster into a seated task once the two minutes are done — the input isn't a distraction from focus, it's what makes focus possible.

How Do I Give My Child Vestibular Input at Home?

When Should I Check In With an OT About Spinning?

Almost never for the spinning itself — most of what's above is a normal developing nervous system doing normal developing-nervous-system things, not a red flag. It's worth a conversation when it's a clear outlier over several weeks (not just a hard afternoon), especially alongside: he never seems to get dizzy at all, even after long stretches of spinning; he avoids and gets distressed by movement most kids seek out, rather than seeking it; spinning is the only thing that calms him and nothing else works, even briefly; it's paired with not responding when his name is called or other communication concerns; or the spinning escalates into unsafe crashing into people or furniture rather than settling him down. Start with what you're already trying, then ask about an OT screening — it's rarely a big finding, usually just a body that needs a different dose of the same ordinary thing.
